Getting Started
Your giving account. Local possibilities.
Already have a donor-advised fund? You can recommend a grant to Hilltop through the organization that sponsors your fund, such as a community foundation or a national charitable sponsor.
Your support helps Hilltop serve children and families, people receiving brain injury services, older adults, and neighbors working toward safety and independence.
Our Development Team can help with recipient information and program questions before you submit your recommendation.
Before you recommend a grant
- Confirm Hilltop’s legal name and tax identification number with Development.
- Choose an amount and any intended program designation.
- Review your sponsor’s grant requirements and processing time.
- Decide whether to share your name and contact information with Hilltop.
How to recommend a grant to Hilltop
Begin with your existing donor-advised fund and coordinate the details with our team.
1. Confirm Hilltop’s details.
Contact our Development Team for the correct legal organization name, tax identification number, and grant delivery details. Discuss any program you would like to support.
2. Contact your DAF sponsor.
Sign in to your donor-advised fund account or contact the sponsoring organization. Use Hilltop’s confirmed details to find the correct charitable recipient.
3. Recommend a grant.
Choose your grant amount and submit your recommendation through your sponsor. The sponsor reviews and approves grants under its policies before sending the funds.
4. Let Hilltop know.
If you would like us to recognize your gift, share your name, sponsor, expected amount, and timing with Development. You can also ask your sponsor to include your contact information with the grant.
Questions about donor-advised funds
What is a donor-advised fund?
A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a charitable account maintained by a sponsoring public charity. Contributions belong to the sponsor, which has legal control of the funds. As a donor advisor, you can recommend grants to eligible charities, subject to the sponsor’s approval.
Do I receive another tax deduction when my DAF sends a grant?
No. Any federal charitable deduction generally relates to your eligible contribution to the DAF sponsor, subject to applicable tax rules. A later grant from the DAF to Hilltop does not create an additional deduction for you. Consult your tax advisor about your situation.
Can I support a specific Hilltop program?
Contact Development before submitting your grant recommendation. We can discuss the program you have in mind and help you confirm appropriate grant-purpose wording with your sponsor.
Can I give anonymously or recommend recurring grants?
Ask your sponsor about its anonymity and recurring-grant options. If a grant arrives anonymously, Hilltop may not be able to identify or personally thank you unless you contact us separately.
Can a DAF grant pay for event tickets or other benefits?
DAF grants cannot be used to provide prohibited personal benefits. Do not use a grant to purchase event tickets, auction items, or other goods or services. Check with your sponsor before recommending a grant connected to an event, membership, or pledge.
Should I use Hilltop’s online donation form?
To give from an existing DAF, recommend the grant through your sponsoring organization. Hilltop’s regular online donation form does not initiate a grant from your DAF.
How long will a grant take?
Review and delivery times vary by sponsor. Ask about processing deadlines, especially near year-end, and let Development know when to expect the grant.
